Think of this as an invitation. Silence your phone, step away from the computer, maybe even sit outside with your headphones on. Whatever helps you focus and get you out of the day-to-day tyranny of the urgent. Grab your favorite pen and paper, and immerse yourself in this 15 minute experience. Give yourself time to reflect and jot down your honest answers. This is the kind of thing that matters most, after all.

The intention for mankind from the beginning of the human story is that we would partner with the creator to protect and advance the creation. And that we would do that with particularity. We would offer some unique aspect of the divine’s beauty in a way that would serve the grander story. Our most fulfilling work is found in participating in the recreation/restoring of something good.
Think about that as you watch Jason Decaires-Taylor tell his story.
“We have a memory of when we were in our mother’s womb. I think somewhere in our body, we recall that experience. I think being underwater puts us back into that mindset. It’s almost like going back to the beginning.”
What is your earliest memory? Do you recall what you first loved and really enjoyed?
“I was young and energetic and wanted to explore the world. So I tried my hand at a variety of things. I was a scuba diver, photographer, paparazzi, I was building stages…I got to the end of it and realized that I didn’t enjoy any of it. It was the one time in my life that I felt completely adrift. So I thought from that moment that I should just start doing what I love.”
What do you love to do most? What would happen if you just started taking small steps in the direction of what you love?
“I sort of provide the canvas and I have a lot of natural assistants that come along and do all the fine brush work, all the fine detailing. There is a lot of finishes and techniques that no human hand could ever accomplish.”
What would it feel like to be partnering with something beyond you to do a thing that no human hand could do on its own? To see the power of recreation translated through you?
“It was a cove that had actually been wiped out by Hurricane Ivan. So many of the corals and marine life that was there had been really damaged. So I thought, if I make an alternative, it might encourage wildlife to move back.
It wasn’t about creating static artwork, it was about creating artwork that actually creates life.”
Becoming a restorative presence in this world simply means that you are translating the restoration of your life on behalf of others. What does the thought of bringing restoration through your life bring to mind?
“When I go back to see the works, I see a space that used to be sand and devoid of life and now I go back there and there’s thousands of fish and thousands of different type of coral and the biodiversity that is there is incredible. And it think that wouldn’t have been there if I hadn’t done that.”
What is the thing you think might go undone if you don’t do it? What is one small step you can take in the direction of accomplishing that one thing?
